Preparing for a carpet cleaning, and how long it takes

A carpet cleaning takes about 20 to 60 minutes per room once the cleaner is set up, or about 2 to 4 hours for a whole home, by cleaning companies’ published estimates, and the carpet then stays damp for 6 to 12 hours. A little preparation keeps the visit on schedule.

How long does carpet cleaning take?

Carpet cleaning takes about 20 to 60 minutes per room, depending on the room’s size, the soil and any stains, and about 2 to 4 hours for a whole home, by cleaning companies’ published estimates. Pet urine treatment and stairs add time, and the carpet then stays slightly damp for 6 to 12 hours after hot water extraction.

How to prepare for carpet cleaners

To prepare for carpet cleaners, clear the way so the visit goes to cleaning:

  • Pick up toys, shoes, cords and anything else on the floor
  • Put away breakables and small furniture you can carry
  • Ask which heavy pieces the company moves, and whether that costs extra
  • Note every stain and pet spot, and what caused it if you know
  • Lift long curtains and bed skirts off the carpet
  • Keep pets in another room or outside until the carpet is dry

Parking, hoses and power

Truck-mounted machines stay in the van, with hoses run through a door, so plan a parking space close to the entry and a door that can stay open during the visit. Portable machines come inside and plug into your outlets, which suits condos and upstairs units.

Do you need to be home during carpet cleaning?

Someone needs to be home at the start, to walk the cleaner through the rooms, stains and pets, and at the end, to check the work and settle the bill. Ask the company whether it needs anyone there in between. In a gated community such as Leisure Village, put the company on the gate list; in hillside neighborhoods such as Spanish Hills, an association may set rules for service vans.

After the cleaning

After the cleaning, run fans and the air conditioning, walk on damp carpet only in clean socks, and leave the furniture blocks in place until the carpet is dry. Drying and aftercare has the details. Hardwood floors in the same rooms? Hardwood floor care covers what not to use on them.

Questions homeowners ask

Should I vacuum before the carpet cleaners come?

Vacuuming before the visit is usually optional, because most carpet cleaning prices include pre-vacuuming. Ask when you book; vacuuming the night before can shorten the visit.
