Wildfire smoke odor in carpet and upholstery
Wildfire smoke odor usually comes out of carpet, rugs and upholstery when the smoke was light and the soot is lifted before it is ground in. Heavy soot, stained surfaces or odor in walls and ducts is restoration work.

Does wildfire smoke odor come out of carpet?
Wildfire smoke odor usually comes out of carpet when the smoke was light: the odor sits in fine soot and smoke residue on the fibers, and cleaning removes them. When soot has stained the carpet, or the odor is also in walls, ceilings and ducts, carpet cleaning alone won’t end it.
What cleaning helps with smoke odor
- Vacuum with a HEPA filter first, to lift dry soot without smearing it
- Then hot water extraction for carpet, and the method the care code allows for upholstery
- Area rugs cleaned on both sides, or at a plant for wool
- New HVAC filters, so the system doesn’t spread soot back
- Air the home out once the outdoor air is clean
Smoke damage restoration versus cleaning
Smoke damage restoration is a different trade from cleaning: restoration companies clean walls and ducts and use deodorizing processes for odor that soaked into the house itself. If soot has stained surfaces or the odor survives a cleaning, ask for a restoration assessment. If insurance is paying, say so when you book.
Recent fires around Camarillo
In November 2024 the Mountain Fire crossed Highway 118 into Camarillo Heights and destroyed at least 83 homes there, among the 243 structures it destroyed in all. In May 2013 the Springs Fire started in the Camarillo Springs area and burned about 28,000 acres. Homes near a fire that did not burn can still hold smoke odor in carpet, upholstery and drapes, and that is when a cleaning helps.
