Wool, oriental and Persian rugs
A hand-woven rug is usually hand washed, at $5–$8 per square foot on HomeAdvisor’s figures, so a 9x12 comes to about $540 to $864. Wool in general runs $3–$8 per square foot. The reasons are the fiber and the dyes: wool needs gentler chemistry and cooler water than nylon or polyester, and natural dyes can run when wet, which is why these rugs go to someone who cleans them often.
Cleaned on the floor, or at a plant
A machine-made synthetic rug is usually cleaned in the room, often on the same visit as the carpet, which saves the trip. Wool and hand-knotted rugs are often sent to a cleaning plant instead, where each rug can be dusted, washed front and back, and laid flat to dry in steady airflow. Pickup and delivery are usually priced on their own, so ask what the total and the turnaround will be. A house with several rugs can split them: the synthetics cleaned on the floor, the hand-knotted ones sent to the plant.

The color test, and the fringe
Before any water touches a rug, each color gets a damp white cloth pressed on it. If dye comes off on the cloth, the method changes or the rug goes to a plant. The fringe, usually cotton, is washed by hand because it frays and browns more easily than the pile.
Pet urine in a rug
Urine soaks past a rug’s pile to the foundation, and from there it often reaches the rug pad and, under that, the floor. A cleaning of the surface can’t get to it: the rug needs a full wash at a plant or a urine treatment, and heat and hot water stay off the spot until then. The pet urine guide explains why.
