Cleaning a couch by its fabric code, with prices per piece
The tag under the cushions decides how a couch can be cleaned, and the piece decides the price: at national rates, $100–$300 for a fabric sofa and $200–$500 for a leather one. Stanley Steemer’s drying estimate for most upholstery is 2 to 6 hours.
Maid VIP estimate: from $75 per piece, and sofas from $150. Services fulfilled by our affiliated service partner, Maid VIP. Covered: Old Town Camarillo, Mission Oaks, Spanish Hills and Las Posas, Leisure Village, Camarillo Heights, Camarillo Springs, Oxnard. Call (805) 793-0293
Find the tag first
Look under the seat cushions or along the deck for a small label with a letter on it. That letter is the maker’s instruction for cleaning the fabric, and a careful cleaner reads it before anything else, then tests a hidden spot such as the back of a skirt. A piece with no tag gets the test and the gentlest method that passes it.

What W, S, WS and X mean
| Code | Means | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaners | Can be cleaned with water and a fabric-safe detergent |
| S | Solvent only | Water can leave rings or shrink it |
| WS (or S/W) | Either | The cleaner picks by the soil and the test |
| X | Vacuum or brush only | No water and no solvent; spots go to a professional |

Microfiber couches
Most microfiber is polyester, and a lot of it carries an S code, which is why a damp cloth leaves a ring as it dries. Cleaners use a solvent on S-coded microfiber and brush the nap back up while it dries, which keeps the surface even.
Leather and suede
Leather has a process of its own: Stanley Steemer, for one, follows the cleaning with a moisturizer worked into the hide. On HomeAdvisor’s national figures, a leather sofa costs $200–$500 where a fabric one costs $100–$300, a difference HomeAdvisor ties to the material. Suede and nubuck are handled on their own. Stanley Steemer relays the makers’ advice: clean leather every 6 to 12 months.
How often, and how long it takes to dry
By Stanley Steemer’s account, furniture makers recommend a professional upholstery cleaning every 12 to 24 months, the interval depending on use. Afterward, most pieces take 2 to 6 hours to dry, depending on the method used and any protector. Set the cushions on edge so air gets to both sides, keep a fan going, and hold off sitting until the seat feels dry.
Smoke smell in the fabric after a nearby fire is its own case: the smoke and ash guide covers what cleaning can do.
