Renting a machine or hiring a cleaner: the math and the risks

On Angi’s 2026 figures, doing the carpet yourself with a rented machine and solution comes to about $30–$75 per room, while a professional costs $40–$125 per room. For the extra money you get a stronger machine and faster drying, and your afternoon back.

Is professional carpet cleaning worth it? The math for three rooms

For three rooms, a professional carpet cleaning runs $120–$375 on Angi’s figures, against $60–$125 for a day with a rental machine, so the question is whether a day of your own time is worth the difference.

What the rental costs

A rental carpet cleaner costs $30–$50 a day on Angi’s figures, and the cleaning solution adds $10–$25 per room. Count a second day if the job runs long, and the cost of a spot pre-treatment if the carpet needs one.

Same idea, smaller machine

A rental works on the same principle as a professional extraction: spray a solution into the pile, pull it back out. It is a smaller machine with less heat and less suction, and Angi lays out the trade: the do-it-yourself route is cheaper and runs on your schedule but takes effort and risks damage; a professional costs more but cleans deeper and dries faster. The usual home mistake is too much water. Carpet left wet for days may smell musty or grow mold; the EPA’s mold guide says to get water-damaged areas and items dry in the first 24 to 48 hours so that mold doesn’t get started.

When doing it yourself is fine

  • A few rooms of synthetic carpet with light soil
  • Carpet no longer under warranty, or under one that allows owner cleaning
  • A touch-up between professional cleanings
  • A room you can leave alone, with fans running, until it dries

When to hire a professional carpet cleaner

  • Pet urine down in the pad, which has to be treated before any rinse
  • Heavy soil and gray traffic paths
  • Wool carpet, or wool and hand-knotted rugs
  • A warranty that asks for proof of hot water extraction with certified equipment, as Shaw’s does, when you aren’t sure a rental machine qualifies
  • Carpeted stairs, which are slow work with a rental
  • A move-out, where a company receipt helps with the landlord

Moving out? What a landlord may deduct is in the move-out guide.

Common questions

Can a rented machine void my carpet warranty?

Renting a carpet cleaner can, if the machine doesn’t meet the warranty’s terms. Shaw’s warranties call for proof that the carpet gets hot water extraction periodically, whether a professional service or a do-it-yourself system does the work, and the equipment must carry the Carpet and Rug Institute’s certification under its Seal of Approval program. Find out whether the rental carries that certification, and keep receipts.

Why is my carpet still wet the next day after renting a machine?

Rental machines have less suction than a professional’s, so more water stays in the pile. Get fans and the air conditioning running, and have someone check it if the carpet hasn’t dried by the next day: the EPA’s mold guide says to get water-damaged areas and items dry in the first 24 to 48 hours so that mold doesn’t get started.
