Wildfire smoke and ash in carpet and furniture: what cleaning can do
A house that stood through a nearby fire can hold smoke in its carpet, sofas, rugs and drapes, and the ash comes first. Light smoke odor usually comes out of fabric with a cleaning; soot on walls and ceilings, or odor in the ducts, belongs to restoration work.

The Mountain Fire and Camarillo
The Mountain Fire started on November 6, 2024, near Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road in Somis. It crossed Highway 118 into Camarillo Heights and destroyed at least 83 homes there, and CAL FIRE counts 243 structures destroyed and 126 damaged across its 19,904 acres. Eleven years earlier, on May 2, 2013, the Springs Fire started beside Highway 101 at Camarillo Springs Road, near Camarillo Springs, and burned 24,251 acres by CAL FIRE’s count. Homes that didn’t burn in either fire still took in smoke and ash.
Ash first, and carefully
Ash contains toxic metals and chemicals, the California Department of Public Health warns, and its wildfire ash fact sheet sets out how to clean it up:
- Put on a close-fitting N95 or P100 respirator; adults should pick one that NIOSH has approved
- Indoors, clean surfaces often with a damp cloth, a HEPA-filter vacuum and a wet mop, and don’t sweep with a broom
- Skip shop vacuums and ordinary vacuums, which don’t filter out small particles
- Outdoors, no leaf blowers or anything else that puts ash into the air
- Wash off any ash on your skin as soon as possible
- Keep children and pets away from ash; clean toys before children play with them, and shampoo a pet that gets ash on it
The order that works for carpet and furniture
AirNow, which the EPA, NOAA, the CDC and partner agencies run, lists carpet, upholstery, window treatments, bedding and clothing among the things to clean after a fire. It also advises fresh filters for portable air cleaners and for the heating and air conditioning system, replaced often. In practice:
Change the system filters first, so the air handler doesn’t blow soot back over clean floors.
HEPA-vacuum carpet and upholstery to lift loose ash without grinding it in.
Then a carpet cleaning, and an upholstery cleaning by the method the fabric code allows.
Area rugs on both sides, and wool or hand-knotted rugs at a plant (area rug cleaning).
Keep filtering the air until the smell fades.
Does the smell come out?
Light smoke odor usually does come out of carpet and fabric: the odor sits in fine soot and residue on the fibers, and a cleaning that reaches them takes it away. Timing matters. Cleaning while smoke is still drifting in from outside buys one round; wait until the air has cleared and the filters are new. If the smell survives a good cleaning, it is probably coming from somewhere else in the house.
When it is restoration, not cleaning
Soot that has stained walls and ceilings, odor that has soaked into the house itself, and smoke in the ductwork belong to smoke damage restoration, a different trade with its own equipment and processes. This site doesn’t refer restoration work. If insurance is paying for any of it, open the claim before booking, keep receipts, and when you ask the cleaning company for a price, tell it the job is part of a claim.
