Getting ready for a carpet cleaning: a checklist, and how long it takes
Estimates for a visit vary: Stanley Steemer says 5 to 10 minutes a room, two smaller companies say 20 to 60 minutes, longer for a large room, and one puts a whole home at about 2 to 4 hours. Then the carpet can stay damp for 8 to 24 hours. A little preparation keeps the visit on schedule and the price where it was quoted.
Maid VIP estimate: about $30–$75 per room, with a $150 visit minimum; most homes about $150–$400. Services fulfilled by our affiliated service partner, Maid VIP. Covered: Old Town Camarillo, Mission Oaks, Spanish Hills and Las Posas, Leisure Village, Camarillo Heights, Camarillo Springs, Oxnard. Call (805) 793-0293
How to prepare for carpet cleaners: the day before
- Go room by room and jot down each stain and pet spot, and its cause if you know it
- Take lamps, plants, breakables and small furniture out of the rooms
- Ask the company which heavy pieces it moves, and whether that costs extra: moving beds and dressers is among the extras listed under carpet cleaning
- Vacuum the traffic areas if you can: Stanley Steemer, for one, recommends a light vacuuming but doesn’t require it, and some companies include a pre-vacuum in the price
- In a gated community, ask how to put the company on the visitor list
That morning
- Pick up shoes, toys, cords and anything else on the floor
- Lift bed skirts and long curtains clear of the carpet
- Put pets in a room that isn’t being cleaned, or outside
- Leave a clear path from the door to each room
- Have the stain notes ready for the walk-through
Gates, parking and hoses
A truck-mounted machine stays in the van and runs its hoses through a door, so it needs parking near the entry and a door that can be left open. A portable machine comes inside and plugs into your outlets, which suits an upstairs unit. Leisure Village has three staffed gates, and its east and west gates close at 7 PM, so ask the association office how to put the company on the gate list; in a hillside tract such as Spanish Hills, an association may set rules for service vans; on a steep street in Camarillo Heights, say where the van can park safely.
How long a carpet cleaning visit takes
Published estimates per room run about 5 to 90 minutes: Stanley Steemer says a room usually takes 5 to 10 minutes, and two smaller companies say 20 to 60, with Quick Clean listing 60 to 90 minutes or more for a large room. One puts a whole home at about 2 to 4 hours. The room’s size, the soil, the stains, the stairs and any pet urine treatment all add time. Someone should be home at the start, for the walk-through, and at the end, to check the work and settle up; ask whether the company needs anyone there in between.
Afterward
Keep fans and the air conditioning going, stick to clean socks if you must walk on the damp carpet, and leave the furniture on its blocks or tabs until the carpet is dry. Keep pets off it until then. The methods guide explains the drying times, and the wood floor guide covers any wood floors in the same rooms.
